Mas Moriya
I am Mas Moriya, a filmmaker and tech entrepreneur committed to making a meaningful impact through entertainment and visual storytelling.
Growing up, I was inspired by my uncle, Sab Shimono, an actor since the 1960s. His presence on TV and in films shaped my understanding of the power of representation. My goal is not solely to elevate Asian American stories but to use storytelling to influence and change minds, reflecting my experiences and the people around me.
Driven by a desire to fill gaps in the industry, I founded Filmclusive (2024) an industry tool to speed up inefficiencies. I also established Strong Asian Lead (2020), a nonprofit film education school focused on historical Asian American cinema, Rogue Photo (2017) a photo agency for nonprofits.
In my creative career, I’ve written screenplays based on Asian American literature and history to share more about Asian Americans with the rest of America.
My Previous Life
I spent over a decade as a professional event and portrait photographer, including three years as Alicia Keys’ personal photographer during her European tour. I founded Rogue Photo, a photo agency that supported nonprofits with marketing materials and documentation.
My Screenwriting Career
As a screenwriter, I specialize in historical family dramas and adaptations of books and public domain stories. My projects aim to inspire change and create a lasting impact on audiences.
My creative passion is screenwriting, focusing on family dramas set in historical war fiction with Asian diaspora history and culture. Projects include a Japanese American incaceration TV series, a reimagining of C.Y. Lee’s “Flower Drum Song”, and other IP based ideas.
Represented by James Smith at AK Management, I bring authenticity and depth to every story.
Community Building
Community building is crucial in my work, not for personal gain, but to help others connect and empower their careers. My focus on sustainability and diverse filmmaking ensures that my projects are environmentally friendly and inclusive, giving everyone a place in the industry.
Anything else?
In my free time, I enjoy painting jackets, cycling, cooking, and exploring cultural experiences. I also mentor 5th graders at the Latino Film Institute, teaching them how to make short films.
Success for me is about impacting others, completing my projects, and achieving financial stability. I aspire to live in New York and contribute to causes like sustainability and diverse filmmaking. Despite being a workaholic, I find fulfillment in helping others and making a difference.
I love to cook, especially Japanese food. I’m honest, brave, and resourceful. I’m intentional about what I do and how I spend my time. That’s me. If you have further questions, drop me a line.
